: : can my utilities still be shut off if I am in bankruptcy? We had a meeting with the creditors this morning and we came home to no gas service, we were told by our gas company that they had no file on record that we were filing bankruptcy, and they had the right to disconnect, even with my case number and my petition in hand they still disconnected, called the Ohio utilites commisioner and they were no help, said they can't get involved when its in bankruptcy court.. can someone please give advice on what we can do?

: In Ohio, "public utilities, such as the electric company, cannot refuse or cut off service because you have filed for bankruptcy. However, the utility can require a deposit for future service and you do have to pay bills which arise after bankruptcy is filed". (Taken from http://www.ohiobankruptcy.com/faq.html)

: Call your lawyer or, if you don't have one, your Trustee.

: Also, I'll bet that the person at the Utilities Commission that you spoke to is full of it, perhaps you should call back and ask for someone who knows what they're talking about.

My gas bill was included in my bk and the account was due for shut off three days after I filed. The attorney faxed paperwork to stop the shut off. A few weeks later, I was informed by the utility company that they were closing my present account and that a depost of $120 was required to open the new account. I believe they closed the old account since it was protected by the bk. I paid the deposit and I haven't had any problems with my utilities.

Good Luck to you.
